Regular maintenance of the ViaAqua® Canister Filter is required to ensure full water flow and optimum filtering performance, Clean or change filtering media at least every 4 weeks.
NOTE:
Decreased water flow is a sign of clogged Filter Media.
  1. Unplug the Canister Filter from the GFCI outlet. NOTE: Prior to maintenance on any electrical aquarium appliance or maintenance to the aquarium, you must disconnect all electrical aquarium devices.
  2. Turn valves to the “OFF” position.
  3. Disconnect the valves from the Pump Lid Housing. If cover is removed without turning off valves, water can siphon onto the floor.
  4. Remove the canister and place in an area proper for maintenance (such as a sink).
  5. Flip out each of the four lid housing clips and release the Pump Lid Housing. The Pump Lid Housing can not be lifted off the Canister Housing.
  6. Remove the Media Container Strainer. Remove the media containers one at a time using the handle. Important: Media Containers must be placed back in the order they were removed.
  7. Replace filter pads and Filter Media.
  8. Clean the canister and impeller/impeller housing.
  9. Remove the Impeller Cover.
  10. Remove the Impeller and Impeller Shaft and clean with water. With a small brush clean the inside of the Impeller well.
  11. Do not clean with soap.
  12. Reassemble.
  13. Apply a small amount of silicone sealant to the Pump Housing Gasket to ensure a good seal.
  14. Install according to the directions for installation.
Important: If tubes were left hanging there is already water in the intake tube. Open the output valve. Open the intake valve. Siphon will start. Wait until the air bubbles stop coming out of the Spray Bar or Discharge Nozzle, and all tube and Canister Housing are full of water.
